Expanding Children’s Communication Through Speech, Language, & Play

Molly1.jpg

I’m Molly Filippini, a speech-language pathologist (SLP). I’m passionate about serving culturally and linguistically diverse Coloradans, and I hold sessions in English and Spanish both online and in-person. I have been working with children ages 2 through 14 and their families to improve their speech and communication for over 10 years.

I provide both evaluations and therapy, including collaborative learning groups. In playful, individualized sessions, I address a range of speech-language disorders and communication needs and coach families on how to support their child’s speech and language development.

When I first meet with a child, I build on their strengths and interests to tailor my sessions with play activities that target precise aspects of their speech or language challenges. Our sessions may include read-alouds, games, problem solving, & movement. I often invite a sibling or parent to participate because a child’s language development is rooted in play and daily family interactions. I love to coach caregivers and siblings in-session because it gives them tools to take home and practice between sessions. I also collaborate with teachers to support a child’s learning and development at school. I consult with occupational therapists, physical therapists, play therapists, psychologists, and other health providers to facilitate appropriate recommendations and creative solutions for each child. Behind the scenes, I keep up with current research and evidence-based practices in speech-language and hearing sciences.

What People Are Saying About Working With Molly

"Molly worked with my seven-year old son on stuttering, making the "th" sound and social-communication skills. His speech improved on all these levels, and he grew so much! I wasn't sure if online sessions would be as effective at first, but we ended up loving the convenience of being home and not having to commute, and the quality of therapy seemed to stay really high. Molly was also a great resource for my son's teachers, sending them tools to use in the classroom and providing notes for a psych evaluation. She also coached us parents on how to support his social skills and managing his stutter. Now he can start and hold a conversation with his peers and is so much more confident socially. Working with Molly really helped turn around a rocky first-grade year!"

~ Rachel, Mother of Telehealth Client

“Molly is a fantastic speech therapist that goes above and beyond to create customized and creative plans to meet your child’s needs. My son saw Molly one on one as well as at school in a classroom environment. Working one on one she created lessons that interested him and specifically targeted his needs, while also boosting his confidence. She tapped into strategies that worked well with him and was able to quickly adjust when things didn’t work well. When Molly worked with my son at school she helped facilitate group play and social conversation with peers. She created charts, picture schedules, and provided written and oral feedback to myself as well as the teachers. In our time working with Molly, our family has seen tremendous improvement in our son’s receptive, expressive, and social communication skills. We are so grateful!”

You’ve been noticing your child’s speech and language problems, hoping they’d clear up on their own… but they aren’t.

Now is the time to get started.

Through thoughtful, standardized assessment and evidence-based research and practice, I will create individualized therapy activities and strategies to support you and your child to increase their confidence, and expand their communication & social connections through speech, language and play.

I offer diagnosis and treatment for speech, language, and communication disorders including:

  • Articulation Disorders

Difficulty with the motor production aspects of speech, or, difficulty producing certain speech sounds. This may look like a child demonstrating difficulty with correctly making the /s/ sound, or substituting the /w/ sound for /r/, etc.

  • Phonological Disorders

An impaired understanding and/or use of the sound system of a language and the rules that dictate the use of these sounds and sound patterns in spoken language. This might look like a child substituting a single speech sound for many different speech sounds when he or she talks, i.e., using the /t/ sound in place of /d, k, g, s, z/, etc.

  • Selective Mutism

May be diagnosed in a child who consistently does not speak in certain situations, such as at school, where there is an expectation for speech, but does speak normally in other situations like at home.

  • Receptive Language

The ability to efficiently understand what others are saying. Disordered receptive language may look like a child having difficulty following directions due to a lack of language understanding (within the child’s primary and/or secondary language).

  • Expressive Language

The ability to fluently and efficiently use words to communicate with others. Disordered expressive language may look like a child having difficulty expressing his/her ideas, wants, and needs due to an inability to produce language in connected speech.

  • Pragmatic Language

The language-based skills that are used to communicate within various situational contexts, i.e., a child’s understanding of the reasons for talking, conversational skills, and the flexibility to modify their speech for different listeners and social situations - understanding when and how to use language to engage with others.
